Mit der Abstimmung über den Änderungsantrag zum "United States Federal Voting Rights Reformation Act" endete heute die
Kongress-Ära von Jonathan T. Sherman. Der 52-jährige war zuletzt Senior Senator seines Staates New York. Am späten Abend schritt er zu seiner letzten Abstimmung im U.S Senate. Anschließend
leistete er im Beisein des neuen Präsidenten der vVereinigten Staaten von Amerika, Josiah Edward Bartlet, seinen Amtseid:
"I, Jonathan Theodore Sherman, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United
States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion;
and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter."
Nach dem Ablegen des Amtseides erklang in Folge von vier Trommelwirbeln und Fanfaren das Präsidialsalut des
Vizepräsidenten, "Hail, Columbia". Sherman wird am morgigen Tage seinem Amtssitz, Number One Observatory Circle vollständig beziehen und anschließend seinen Stab berufen. Es wird erwartet, dass
Sherman in der Administration Bartlet das traditionelle Feld der Außenpolitik abdecken wird. Sherman gilt als Kenner des internationalen Parketts. So war er unter anderem Botschafter bei den
Vereinten Nationen und bei der Europäischen Union.
